Background/Objectives: The purpose of this study was to verify of the discriminant validity of the K-CBCL 6-18 and MMPI-A in diagnosing internalizing or externalizing disorders by examining the results of adolescents in child foster care having psychological disorders. Methods: The participants were 278 adolescents in child foster care who had psychological disorders. The research instruments used were the K-CBCL 6-18 and MMPI-A. The collected data were analyzed by testing the differences between groups with internalizing or externalizing disorders and conducting a regression analysis using SPSS 25.0. Results: First, the scores of the group with internalizing disorders were significantly higher than those of the group with externalizing disorders for anxious/depressed, withdrawn/depressed, internalizing, and DSM affective problems scale the K-CBCL 6-18. The score of the group with externalizing disorders was significantly higher than that of the group with internalizing disorders for rule-breaking behavior and DSM ADHD scale of K-CBCL 6-18. There were no significant differences between the two groups in MMPI-A clinical scale. Second, the DSM ADHD, withdrawn/depressed, and DSM affective problem scale of K-CBCL 6-18 significantly discriminated between the two groups. Conclusion/Implications: The DSM ADHD, withdrawn/depressed, and DSM affective problem scales of the K-CBCL 6-18, which are evaluated by caregivers, had high diagnostic discrimination for internalizing and externalizing disorders in adolescents in child foster care. The results suggest that the K-CBCL 6-18 can be useful as a measure to screen for internalizing and externalizing disorders in adolescents in child foster care and can be used for early therapeutic intervention.
