초록

Materials on the Koguryo tomb murals have been dispersed to several countries since they have been discovered and investigated in the early 20th century. Those materials distributed to each country have been studied and understood from each different perspectives, and have been produced a whole set of knowledge on the subject. The diaspora feature of the Koguryo murals can be well exhibition in research materials on the Twin Pillars Tomb which represents the 5th century Koguryo murals as the part of wall paintings of the Twin Pillars have been surprisingly reappeared from the storage of the National Museum of Korea after it have been buried from the eyes of people after the excavation of the tomb in 1910s. Located at Yonggang prefecture, Nampo city, South Pyongan province of North Korea, the Twin Pillars Tomb have been excavated in 1910s and the photographs and the replica paintings as well as the fragments of wall paintings have been distributed to South Korea and Japan. The Eastern side wall of the entranceway of the tomb has been disappeared from the site during the Japanese colonial time period, and have been known only by the partial replica paintings and dry glass plates made in the 1910s, which limited the understanding the actual composition of the wall painting and the arrangement of overall painting subject matters inside a two chambered tomb. Surprisingly, the east and the west side wall paintings of the entrance way of the tomb reappeared in 2018 in South Korea as they sorted out about 10 boxes of Koguryo wall painting fragments housed at the museum. The procession scene on the east side wall of the entrance way shows the 4-5 levels’ procession scene consisting of about 30 people and contains the beautiful painting of Koguryo females and the carriages and the mounted warrior with armor. The placement of large procession scene on the entrance way is very rare as for the Koguryo murals and this type of pictorial program would ask us to reconsider the general placement of Koguryo’s typical subject matters of daily life scenes. As more figure paintings have been recovered from the entire wall, more in-depth interpretation on the pictorial program of the Twin Pillars Tomb could be suggested further. This diaspora phenomenon of Koguryo murals certainly proves the unique position of Koguryo murals as a research subject which can be only accomplished by the international corporation of each country which possesses important research materials. These international efforts would make it successful to complete Koguryo mural studies and bring the most satisfied outcome.
