초록

The purpose of this study is to illustrate the significant achievement of He Qifang(1912-1977)'s first collection of poetry The Prophecy 預言 (Yuyan, 1945). In analyzing the importance of this work, I examine the following questions: What are the particular artistic styles and aesthetic ideas developed and preferred by him in each individual stage such as Part I(1931-1933), Part II(1933-1935), and Part III(1936-1937)? What does He Qifang bespeak in the spirit of the early nineteen thirties that would influence his poetics? How does he engage with and promote the philosophical orientation that poetry should be judged on its own term instead of serving society in general? The seventeen poems in Part I express lovesickness, within the traditional style of the love poem. Although these poem convey He Qifang's passionate love and disappointment, their tone is calm and thoughtful. Moreover, the object of his love appearing in these poems is always symbolic and dreamlike. The twelve poems in Part II begin to gradually reflect the realities surrounding him as well as the dark side of modern life, i.e., emotional isolation and dissociation. The five poems in Part III advocate the self-criticism and become cynical in conveying the voice of bitterness, violence, and hardness.
