The Mediating Effects of Cognitive Flexibility Moderated by Supervisor Support on the Relationships between Self-Focused Attention and Psychological Burnout of Novice Counselors

초록

This study examined the mediating effects of cognitive flexibility, moderated by supervisor support, on the relationships between novice counselors’ self-focused attention (general self-focused attention and self-absorption) and psychological burnout. A survey was conducted with 213 novice counselors who had at least three supervision experiences. Data were analyzed using SPSS 28.0 for correlation analysis and the PROCESS macro (Version 4.3) for the moderated mediation analysis. Correlation analysis showed that general self-focused attention was positively correlated with cognitive flexibility and supervisor support. In contrast, self-absorption was positively correlated with burnout but negatively correlated with cognitive flexibility and supervisor support. Furthermore, the mediating effect of cognitive flexibility in the relationship between self-focused attention and burnout was significantly moderated by supervisor support. This study expands the understanding of the factors associated with psychological burnout among novice counselors and provides foundational data for establishing tailored training environments based on the level of supervisor support.
