초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine and describe of the poverty status among the female-headed families through various poverty thresholds. Several meaningful conclusion were reached. First, this paper expands the range of poverty study of the female-headed families from the absolute poverty to the near poor while previous studies on female-headed families have largely focused on the absolute poverty threshold to explain the variables of poverty. The argument in this paper is that such an focus is misplaced. Second, although there are some limitations, this study provide three important evidence to suggest that the poverty of female-headed families is ultimately the result of structural failings at the economic, political, and social levels. These included an analysis into the lack of sufficient jobs in the labor market, the burden of caring on women, and the lack of social safety net. We then briefly outline a framework for reinterpreting the poverty of female-headed families.
