A Narrative Inquiry into the Art Therapy Experiences of an Adult Victimized by School Violence

초록

This study examines how an adult who experienced emotional isolation and loss of self due to school violence reconstructed her emotions, memories, and identity through Altered Book art therapy based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), using a narrative inquiry approach. The participant was a woman who had endured school violence during adolescence and had lived in a prolonged state of social withdrawal and isolation. From February to March 2025, she participated in a total of 15 art therapy sessions, along with pre- and post-interviews, through which she re-storied her life using both imagery and language. Member checking, reflexive journaling, and triangulation were employed to ensure the validity of the study. The findings were as follows. First, the participant experienced a narrative transformation through the art therapy process, reconstructing the story of her suffering and reclaiming a sense of self-identity. Second, for adults who experienced school violence, art therapy held the meaning of a profound journey of self-exploration in terms of self-understanding and identity recovery, enabling emotional healing and self-acceptance beyond verbal expression. Based on these findings, the significance and limitations of this study were discussed.
