Counselors’ Experiences in a Phototherapy Workshop: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis
  • 정윤경

초록

This study explored the lived experiences of counselors who participated in a phototherapy workshop and the meaning of those experiences for their self-understanding and reflective awareness, while also considering the potential of photography as an experiential tool in counselor education and training. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with three counselors who had completed the workshop, and the data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006, 2019, 2021) reflexive thematic analysis. Three themes and six subthemes emerged. First, in selecting and viewing photographs, participants encountered unintended concerns about themselves and confronted long-repressed emotions and memories. Second, this confrontation led to self-acceptance through symbolic imagery and the formation of a new self-narrative. Third, as personal experience extended into clinical practice, empathy toward clients deepened and ethical sensitivity regarding the application of phototherapy developed. The recovery some participants experienced suggests that the therapeutic process can also affect the counselor. These findings indicate that phototherapy workshops can serve as an experiential tool for fostering counselors’ self-understanding and reflective awareness, while their confrontational intensity calls for careful application.
