The Family Life Educator Certification System of the Korean Association of Family Relations: A 30-Year Review and Future Directions for Certification Reform

초록

Objectives: We examined the family life educator certification system administered by the Korean Association of Family Relations (KAFR) over the past 30 years and proposed a restructuring plan. Method: We reviewed the foundations of family life education, compared related certification systems in Korea and abroad, examined university course offerings, and surveyed KAFR members, students, and experts. Results: Family life education is a professional field grounded in preventive, educational, and strengths-based approaches. In Korea, it has expanded alongside public service delivery systems. Despite the growth of short-term online private certifications, KAFR’s certification remains distinctive because of its degree-based requirements and tiered structure. Respondents preferred including “specialist” in the title and using “K-CFLE” to enhance professional image, international compatibility, and academic continuity. They also supported using “family education” rather than “family life education” in the certification title to align with terminology used in Family Centers and other professional settings. Conclusions: We propose renaming the certification “가족교육전문가(K-CFLE)” and expanding certified professionals’ roles beyond program instruction to include planning, implementation, evaluation, research, and administration.
