The Mediating Effects of Basic Psychological Needs on the Relationship between Adolescents’Perceived Mothers’Psychological Control and School Adjustment

The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of basic psychological needs on the relationship between adolescents’ perceived mothers’ psychological control and school adjustment of the adolescents. This survey was conducted among 534 middle school students about mothers’ psychological control, basic psychological needs, school adjustment to collect data. The results are as follows. First, adolescents’ perceived mother’s psychological control has significant negative correlation with school adjustment and basic psychological needs sub-factor (autonomy, relationship). And basic psychological needs has significant positive correlation with school adjustment. Second, this study confirmed the total mediating effect of autonomy and the partial mediating effect of relationship on the relationship between adolescents’ perceived mothers’ psychological control and school adjustment. Results suggested that it is important to create an environment which the adolescents can meet basic psychological needs. Finally, it was discussed that the implications of this study, limitations, and suggestions for future studies.
