초록
This study explores how married migrant women and young adults from multicultural families in South Korea perceive and decode ‘Damunhwa’, a term commonly translated as multiculturalism. Drawing on in-depth interviews, it examines how this term- no longer effective as a euphemism for sociocultural diversity- is interpreted in everyday life. The findings show that participants critically read media representations that standardize nationality and ethnicity and rely on melodramatic narratives. While some internalize dominant media language, most negotiate with or oppose institutionalised discourse of Damunwha. The study calls for reflection on representational practices detached from everyday realities.
