The purpose of this research was to explore pre and post experiences of adolescent bullies participating in special educational programs designed for perpetrators, and to identify benefits and limitations of the programs. In order to accomplish the purpose, ten participants identified as perpetrators were interviewed before and after participating in the programs. The interviews were analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) method. The results showed that before participating in the programs, the participants justified their bullying behaviors although they knew that bullying behaviors were wrong. Moreover, the participants had little interest in the programs and regarded participating in the programs as boring and unpleasant. However, while engaging in the educational programs, the participants had time for self-reflection, gained self-understanding and developed positive attitude toward others. They also promised to act in non-violent manners when they face conflicts in the future. Participants empathized with the victims, and their hostile feelings toward them were also reduced to a certain degree. Participants gave positive reviews on the programs, reporting that they enjoyed learning something new and talking about themselves to the educators. On the other hand, some participants reported that they were still not satisfied with the way how issues and conflicts related to bullying were taken care of. Moreover, some participants remained confused with their mixed feelings toward the victims. The present research bears significance in that it explored benefits and limitations of the special educational programs for adolescent bullies, specifically focusing on the changes in the perspectives of the adolescent bullies. Areas for improvements of the programs are discussed.
