This study seeks to develop a competency model for multicultural counselors. The study included the following questions: (1) what are the components of a competency model for multicultural counselors? and (2) what is the relative importance of competencies in common and specific multicultural counseling settings? To address these questions, a three-stage methodology was employed. Firstly, a conceptual competency model for multicultural counselors was developed based on comprehensive literature reviews, in-depth interviews, and open-ended questionnaires. Secondly, a delphi was performed to evaluate the draft of the competency model, with the delphi panels selected from diverse fields of multicultural counseling. Consequently, seventeen multicultural counselors participated in the three rounds of delphi surveys. The results of the competency model adequacy analysis demonstrated three competency clusters, thirteen competency factors, and forty-seven competency indicators. Thirdly, an additional delphi survey was performed to identify the relative significance of each competency component of the confirmed models. The Analytic Hierarchy Process method was allied in this stage to calculate weights and consistency ratios. The resulting competency model of multicultural counselors reflected the specificity of Korean multicultural counseling, and provided an important knowledge base for developing educational curriculum for Korean multicultural counselors. Accordingly, the findings and implications were also discussed.
