This study aims to compare the K-WPPSI-IV profiles of preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental language disorder (DLD) to verify differences in the cognitive characteristics of the two groups. The participants were 74 preschoolers aged 4 to 6 who administered the K-WPPSI-IV and were diagnosed with ASD or DLD at three general hospitals, one private psychiatric clinic, and three child development centers in the Seoul metropolitan area from 2020 to 2024. Descriptive statistical analysis of the means of the FSIQ (Full Scale IQ), Primary Index Scales, Ancillary Index Scales, and subtest scores was performed, and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was conducted to compare the differences between children in early childhood with ASD and DLD. Results indicate that children in early childhood with ASD showed significantly lower Working Memory Index, Processing Speed Index, Nonverbal Index, and Cognitive Proficiency Index than children with DLD. ASD also showed significantly lower scores on the Bug Search, Picture Memory, Cancellation and Zoo Locations. In conclusion, This study provides empirical evidence that the Working Memory, Processing Speed, Nonverbal and Cognitive Proficiency Indices of the K-WPPSI-IV can serve as a differential indicator between ASD and DLD within neurodevelopmental disorders.
