Objectives This study investigates the effects of internalizing problematic behavior on the career maturity of adolescents with parental loss experiences and test the mediating effects of resilience between them. Methods The subjects included 258 middle and high school students that experienced a parental loss in the “2020 Survey on the Dreams of Future Generations in South Korea.” The SPSS 26.0 program was used for multiple regression analysis along with the analysis method of mediating effects proposed by Baron & Kenny (1986). And the statistical significance of the mediating effect was analyzed using Bootstrapping. Results The average of internalizing problematic behavior of adolescents who experienced parental loss was 1.47, the average of career maturity was 3.63, and the average of resilience was 3.15. It was found that the higher the internalizing problematic behavior of adolescents who experienced parental loss, the lower their resilience and career maturity. The main analysis results for the research question are as follows. First, the internalizing problematic behavior of adolescents with the experiences of parental loss had significant negative (-) effects on their resilience; secondly, the internalizing problematic behavior of adolescents with the experiences of parental loss also had significant negative (-) effects on their career maturity; finally, resilience was confirmed as a fully mediated effect in the relationship between the internalizing problematic behavior and career maturity of adolescents who experienced parental loss. These results suggest that resilience can suppress the negative effects of internalizing problematic behavior on career maturity of adolescents who have experienced parental loss. Conclusions Based on these findings, the study raises a need for institutional and practical support measures to increase the resilience of adolescents that experienced parental loss so that they can promote their career maturity.
