This study aimed to investigate the effects of the parental depression of children and adolescents and social capital in the family on their academic achievements by poverty and test model differences by their development stage. For this, secondary data were collected from a total of 1267 children & adolescents (4-6th graders: 621, 7-9th graders: 646) and their parents through ‘2013 Korean Youth General Survey ’, and they were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). To test differences between children and adolescents, furthermore, multi-group analysis was carried out. Then, the results found the followings: Poverty didn’t have a direct effect on the academic achievement of children and adolescents. Instead, it revealed indirect influence through parental depression and social capital within the family with statistically significant mediation paths. According to analysis on differences by their development stage, among children, poverty had an indirect effect on academic achievements through mediators. In adolescents, on the contrary, poverty had direct influence on them. Based on these results, this study mentioned a necessity of reducing parental depression and increasing social capital within the family for improving the academic achievements of children and adolescents from poor families.
