The purposes of this study are: 1) to establish due recognition as the normative ground of peace education by means of interpreting the struggle for recognition in inter-Korean relations; and 2) to suggest a mode of joint inquiries which is expected to create due recognition and fused horizons toward peacebuilding. As peace is entwined with democracy in Dewey’s ideal, this study draws a normative framework of peace education from it. This framework denotes a joint inquiry(hereafter ‘JI’) as an imaginative rehearsal in thought for a better understanding of the Others in conflicts and a hope for the transformative possibilities of their relations. Dewey is concerned with a growing habit of intolerance and antagonism that hinders JI. Thus, JI must be renewed to welcome diversities and to form new habits of openness toward the Others by which mutual respect and cooperation prevail over conflict and competition. In order to contextualize the inter-Korean conflicts, this study deploys the theory of the Other in line with Derrida’s theory of a binary opposition. This paper examines JI as a means to realize the distortion conspired by the hierarchical dichotomy between the North and the South which has served to legitimize the desire for winning over the Other. It must be deconstructed by JI. Kristeva's notion of the abject invites us for JI to acknowledge that the North and the Others are within us. Through this we shall accommodate, rather than hate, their differences more easily. Yet, both theories appear to claim that all the social relations are imposed by structures of power. Both limit the possibility of JI regulated by a normative framework. As an alternative, this study examines Taylor’s theory of recognition. In this theory, JI can produce viable modes of due recognition. Those are: 1) the suspension of the judgement of worth; 2) the acceptance of the agency of the Others and their potential for internal change; 3) a commitment to the enhancement of the Others’ agency and their human rights; and 4) an attempt for the fusion of the horizons by revising one’s own standards of the judgement. This mode of JI is vital for peace education and can lead us to the peaceful relations out of the struggle for recognition in Korean peninsula.
