Objectives: This study aims to examine whether emotion suppression mediates the relationship between family relationship difficulties and mental health among parents raising children and to determine whether this mediation effect is moderated by gender. Methods: Data from 296 parents with children aged 18 or younger across the country were analyzed using SPSS 28.0 and Process Macro Models 4, 1, and 7. Mediation, moderation, and moderated mediation analyses were conducted. Results: First, difficulties in family relationships and emotional suppression had a direct and significant impact on mental health. Second, the impact of difficulties in family relationships on mental health through emotional suppression was significant. Third, there was a difference in the level of emotional suppression based on gender. Fourth, a significant difference was found in the interaction of gender within the relationship where difficulties in family relationships affect mental health through emotional suppression, indicating the presence of a moderated mediation effect. Conclusions: This study examines the psychological process between family relationships, emotional suppression, and mental health, and verifies whether this process could be moderated by gender. Through this, the study highlights the need for emotional support programs to promote healthy family relationships and suggests tailored emotional support based on gender.
