This study examined the mediating effects of stress coping styles on the relationship between internal and external locus of control and the school adjustment of elementary school students. To achieve these research goals, 368 elementary school students in Seoul and Gyeonggi - do were used to investigate the internal and external locus of control scale, the stress coping scale, and the school adjustment scale. The collected data were used for correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, the Baron and Kenny's (1986) mediating effect verification procedure, and the Sobel test. The results are as follows. First, the internal and external locus of control showed a clear correlation with school adjustment. The internal locus of control showed a positive correlation with the active coping style, the social support seeking coping style and showed a negative correlation with the aggressive coping style. The external locus of control showed a positive correlation with aggressive, as well as passive/avoidant coping styles, and negatively correlated with the active, the social support seeking coping styles. Finally, the active and social support seeking coping styles showed positive correlations with school adaptation, and the aggressive coping style showed a negative correlation. Second, the internal and external locus of control had a significant influence on school adjustment through the partial mediation of active, aggressive, and social support-seeking coping styles. Based on these results, this study is important in that it provides basic data on child counseling, parent education, and program development for those interested in the field of school adjustment.
