This paper analyzes the mechanisms by which Nazi ideology cultivated male homophobia, and attempts to illuminate various aspects and the significance of the counter-discourse against it. The Nazi Party, who distorted and abused racism and sexuality on an essentialist basis, antagonized women, Jews, and homosexuals as a common denominator of hatred. Following Germany s humiliating defeat in World War I, it was determined that such social groups had to be excluded from the reconstruction of the nation, and so they were labeled “commensurable” because of a presupposed affinity. Sexual discourse in the Nazi era fueled the hate production mechanism of power ideology, but paradoxically it also provided an opportunity for resistance discourse. To that end, this paper focuses on the research and activities of Magnus Hirschfeld(1868-1935), a notable sexologist who advanced the sexual reform movement in opposition to the homophobic discourse of the Nazi regime.
