An Analysis of News Media Coverage of Digital Literacy Education for Older Adults to Bridge the Digital Divide

This study proposes a framework for the development and operation of Digital literacy programs for older adults in Public libraries. The study analyzed news media coverage of ‘Digital literacy education’ for older adults over a period of 25 years. A total of 4,120 articles were extracted from the BigKinds. A quantitative analysis and content analysis were conducted on the news media frames. The analysis showed that, since 2000, the news media have focused on the issue of digital literacy education for older adults due to the development of information and communication technology (ICT) and the widespread use of digital devices. The frequently discussed topics were ‘IT_Science’ and ‘Local’. The primary terms were ‘digital’, ‘older adults’, ‘education’, ‘information’, ‘digital divide’ and ‘smartphone’. As a result of the study, the news media reported on the government, local governments and companies providing digital literacy education for older adults. In addition, the news media focused on the digital transformation of Korean society and the digital divide caused by the aging population.
