초록

The Incense Burner with Carved Ferocious Animals Design, dating back to the Koryo period and currently preserved in the National Museum of Korea, was meticulously crafted to emulate the form of abronze Fangding tripod. The inception of Koryo celadon was significantly influenced by the Yuezhou kiln located in Zhejiang Province, China. Between the late 11th century and the early half of the 12th century, amidst the flourishing material and cultural exchanges between Koryo and the Liao Dynasty, the “Xuanhe Bogutu” compiled under Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty was introduced into Koryo. The scholarly consensus now identifies the “Shang ZhaofuDing” depicted in the first volume of the “Xuanhe Bogutu” as the original model for the Incense Burner. The inscription engraved on the inner wall of the Incense Burner, which references the “Xuanhe Bogutu,” is interpreted as “Ya Shao Fu Zi Xin Yue.” Given the inherent limitations and numerous inaccuracies with in the “Xuanhe Bogutu” as a historical source, a departure from this document is warranted to offer a fresh interpretation of the inscription’s true significance. Drawing upon the bronze relics unearthed from the YinRuins and the inscriptions’ rubbings compiled in the “Yin Zhou Jin Wen Ji Cheng,” this study has identified inscriptions akin to those found on the Incense Burner. This paper posits that the “Ya-character” frame present in the inscription’s initial symbol is an emblematic signifier within the clan emblem inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty. By embracing the widely supported and historically entrenched “Ya-character ancestral temple theory,” this study contends that the Ya-character frame within the inscription denotes a connection to the “ancestral temple.” The inscription’s inaugural symbol is deduced to represent the clan emblem of the “Ya Hu” clan, a highly esteemed lineage during the terminal Shang Dynasty era, while the subsequent symbol signifies both the name and clan emblem of the historical vassal state of the Shang Dynasty, known as the “Guzhu Vassal state.”
