초록

This study was conducted to explore and understand the professional music therapist’s experience with music intervention. The participants were six music therapists who were members of the Korean Music Therapy Association or the American Music Therapy Association with 8 to 17 years of clinical experience. The data were analyzed by applying the phenomenological methods of Giorgi(1994/2004), and 332 meaning units were generated. Based on them, 16 subcategories and 5 categories were identified: (a) strategic intervention; (b) countertransference experience; (c) musical skill and literacy; (d) session reparation/analysis; (e) demand for continuing professional development. The subcategories of ‘strategic intervention’ were ‘music application according to the client’s state and function, appropriate transition and problem-solving, providing appropriate steps and structure, skilled intervention based on rich experience’. The subcategories of ‘countertransference experience’ were difficulty in expanding the client’s experience due to countertransference, not providing better music intervention to the client due to countertransference, anxiety due to countertransference, using positively countertransference in therapy’. The subcategories of ‘musical skill and literacy’ were ‘skillful use of musical techniques, good musician, limitations of performance techniques’. The subcategories of ‘session preparation/analysis’ were ‘analysis of the client’s reactions after sessions, session preparation and planning’. The subcategories of ‘demand for continuing professional development’ were ‘demand for study of relevant knowledge in medical setting, demand for studying music-used in sessions, demand for change in repetitive playing styles’. It is meaningful in that this study can help music therapy students and music therapists expand their understanding of music intervention. It can also help other professionals recognize the diversity and professionalism in music therapy field.
