The Mediating Effect of Internalized Shame: Relationship between Perceived Parental Psychological Control and Procrastination of Twenties

Objectives The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of internalized shame on the relationship between perceived parental psychological control and procrastination of twenties. Methods To verify these hypotheses, young adults in their 20s, living in Seoul and Gyeonggi area participated in the questionnaire covering The Dependency-oriented and Achievement-oriented Psychological Control Scale, Internalized Shame Scale, and Adult Inventory of Procrastination. Total 357 questionnaires out of 387 are utilized to reach conclusions with SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 18.0. Results Firstly, parental psychological control is positively correlated with the internalized shame and procrastination. It means that the higher perception of psychological control, the higher internalized shame and the more procrastination can be resulted in. Secondly, internalized shame has mediating effect on the relationship between parental psychological control and procrastination. Psychological control of fathers indirectly affects twenties internalized shame and brings negative impact on procrastination. On the other hands, mothers’psychological control directly influences internalized shame and procrastination. Conclusions The implication of the study is suggested in the discussion. This study not only gives better understanding of the developmental process of procrastination for young adults in their 20’s, but it can also provide counseling strategies and intervention directions to clients experiencing psychological difficulties with internalized shame.
