The purpose of this study is to observe the difference of self-talk between novice counselors and expert counselors in the situation where the client has a negative reaction to the counseling. A video stimulus with circumstances that clients made negative complaints expressing dissatisfaction with the counselors was produced to collect the counselors’ self-talks. The study participants were 30 counselors; 15 novice counselors and 15 expert counselors. They empathized the position of the counselor in the video and watched the video and reported their self-talks. Total 1,067 self-talk were selected based on the counselor’s self-talk category created by Hae-Won Shim(2005) Participants' self-talk frequency and ratio of those two groups were analyzed. First, as a result of analyzing the differences according to counseling experience, the frequency of self-talk for novice counselors was higher than that of expert counselors. Second, in the superordinate categories of counselor’s self-talk, self-talk frequency of the novice counselors was higher than that of the expert counselors especially in ‘oneself’ and ‘client’ categories, but in the ‘counseling plans or intention’ category, the expert counselors showed higher frequency in comparison to that of the novice counselors. Expert counselors, in comparison to the novice counselors, showed less self-talk related to ‘oneself’ category, but showed that there is a lot of self-talk related to therapeutic techniques and counseling intervention strategies to clarify client’s understanding or to bring out client’s insight and change. Based on the results of this study, the aspect of self-reflection according to the career of counselor was discussed and implications for effective supervision and counselor education were suggested.
