This research was initiated by raising a question about how culture can react to our aging society. As our society is transforming from aging society into super－aging society, there are many senior poets who are constantly creating works in 100 year old Korean world of poetry. Apart from the age of poets, life or spirit of the old as well as problem of the old is often shown in the text in the form of image, metaphor, symbol or tone of voice so active researches on the old age poet seem to be needed. Given with the fact that various outcomes have been achieved through researches on the old age novels, the research on the old age poet is still remained in the circle of studying the consciousness of old age of senior poets rather than studying category or concept of the old age poems. This preliminary research is to study the old age poems by acknowledging the problem and main purpose of this study is to define concept and category of the old age poems while addressing necessity and possibility of research on the old age poem. Preceding researches suggesting the possibility of research on the old age poem addressed consciousness of old age of senior poets by targeting all poems written by senior poets but this research claims that not all poems written in the old age can be old age poems and old age poems can be written by poets who are not senior. Poets who are not old can write poems about the old age. In brief, the old age poem is a text－oriented concept that can be created by poets whether they are old or not. In other words, speech about the old age needs to be shown in the relationship between the subject and the object of speech and this means the concept of old age poem needs to be established in the level text not the age. So this paper studied how the old or the old age is expressed in each poem focusing on the tone of voice of subject after categorizing poems into ‘poem of which subject of speech is the old age’ and ‘poem of which object of speech is related to the old age’ focusing on the tone of voice of subject. As a result, regarding ‘poem of which subject of speech is the old age’, distance between the subject of production and the subject of speech is close and the poem is very emotional as its purpose is to express the emotion of subject. In addition, emotions or problems of the old are directly expressed from various viewpoints. Therefore, the tone of voice is either negative which is depressing and self－mockingly or it is positive which is philosophical and optimistic. In the contrary, ‘poem of which object of speech is related to the old age’ shows personal emotion or result of thoughts about getting old and how the subject who is not old builds up relationship with the old ones from contemplative or philosophical view and the poem admires the wisdom of life of the old. Regarding the surrounding people, they observe realistic problems that the old ones are experiencing and show social problems of aging society from pitying or critical point of view. As a result, old age poem refers to the poem that expresses the consciousness or problem of the old age by using image, metaphor, symbol or tone of voice as the old age which is the subject of speech turns into the main content in the relationshipwithsubject. Researcher will study what type of liberal thinking is fostered about aging or the old age and how the old age poem reflects aging society by using various analysis methods. Furthermore, it is expected that it will be utilized in a convergent way in many different areas for the old as well as the generation preparing for the old age once texts of the old age poem are itemized.
