This paper clarifies some characteristics of Japanese university spin-offs based on the survey of listed companies. Recognizing the significance of university spin-offs, in the late 1990s the Japanese government began to implement changes in legal and policy frameworks to encourage university–industry linkages. Consequently, the number of university spin-off ventures in Japan grew significantly. And then many university spin-offs are being created in the biotechnology and IT fields. Through case study, it examines the history, technology and critical development path of two Japanese ventures, Euglena and Soiken Holdings. The finding of case study showed that successful businesses can create new values through business model innovation and collaborative network with major company, even in a rapidly changing market environment.
