This study is designed to identify the useful factors which help college students make a better decision by researching the relationships between psychological independence from parents and career decision making self-efficacy. The subjects of the study were 377college students in 5 four-year-colleges around Seoul and Kyonggi area. First, the results show that psychological separation from parents is correlated partially with career decision making self-efficacy. Specially, males are exceedingly related to psychological separation from their mothers. Thus, in case of career counseling for male students, psychological separation from their fathers and mothers needs to be considered. Secondly, functional and emotional independence turned out to be the most influential to career decision making self-efficacy of the subscales of psychological separation. According to this, when males have intimacy with mothers and as males get higher acceptance and more affective support from their mothers and they are better at dealing with their own problems without their parents' assistance, they have higher career decision making self-efficacy. Thirdly, females' career decision making self-efficacy is more affected by perceived economical situations than by psychological separation from parents. The poor the perceived economic situations, the higher self-efficacy. Along with the discussion of these consequence, this study suggests there is a need of extended research on factors that affect and improve career decision-making self-efficacy. This study also proposes that career intervention counseling programs be developed based on career decision making self efficacy.
