The purpose of this study is to develop a therapeutic alliance scale to measure the level of therapeutic alliance between therapist and client in a music therapy setting. The procedure of the study was as follows. A literature review was conducted to identify the phenomenon of therapeutic alliance in music therapy settings, followed by in-depth interviews with 10 experienced music therapists about their experiences with therapeutic alliance to develop an initial 3-factor, 48-item scale. The developed items were revised to 30 items through content validation by five experts, and the main survey was conducted. The survey was conducted from July 6 to July 20, 2023, among music therapists with music therapist certification, and a total of 204 data were collected. Exploratory factor analysis, inter-factor correlation analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted, and as a result, a total of 5 factors and 21 questions were finally selected. Five items were selected for the ‘client’s positive emotions experience’ factor, four items for the ‘therapist’s empathetic attitude’ factor, four items for the ‘client’s cooperation for therapy’ factor, three items for the ‘music’s therapeutic cooperation’ factor, and finally five items for the ‘therapist’s cooperation in intervention’ factor. The significance of this study is that by developing a measure of therapeutic alliance between therapist and client in a music therapy setting, it is possible to measure the level of therapeutic alliance while taking into account the unique characteristics of the music therapy clinical setting.
