This article addresses the changes in modern society and the challenges of liberal arts education. As its etymology implies, the core of a liberal arts education is to equip young people with the general intellectual ability they need to navigate the world. To this end, liberal arts education has two goals and challenges. One is to preserve this world. Young people should be able to understand and protect this world that people share together. To do this, they need to learn an ethic of coexistence that allows them to stand in solidarity with others. The other is to renew the world. “To preserve the world, the world must be renewed,” says Arendt. To do this, a liberal arts education must train young people to always be critical, reflective, and creative. The meaning and possibilities of liberal arts education are analyzed through the case of the Sunheon Interdisciplinary Humanities program.
