초록

Haruki Murakami has published documentary books, such as Underground and The Promised Land, in which Aum Shinrikyo, the ‘New Religion’ of Japan, and its violence has been featured. His novel, 1Q84, also focuses on this topic. Although Haruki said the purpose of these works was to question why this religion had produced such violence, 1Q84 offers an answer of ‘absolute love’ instead of answering the logic of New Religion. This paper addresses some of the problems encountered by using that logic of absolute love. Since 1Q84 avoids answering questions about the violence of New Religion, the violence resulting from this resistance to new religion stands out. Haruki Murakami asserts that Japanese people seek the easy consolation of religion instead of addressing one's own problems. He emphasizes no matter how attractive new religion may be, it is important for an individual to live in a world filled with contradictions rather than to be assimilated into that religion. Although 1Q84 declares that the power of living in this world is absolute love, the story of this new religion is rather confusing, and as a result 1Q84 results in describing another version of new religion. 村上春樹『1Q84』は、オウム真理教の地下鉄サリン事件を契機に発せられた質問、すなわち、なぜオウム真理教のような新宗教に日本人がさほどたやすく魅了されるのか、新宗教の暴力性はどこから来るのか、またそれに対抗する「文学」の力はどのように可能になるかといった質問に対する答えとして発表された。 しかし奇妙なことに、『1Q84』は新宗教側の暴力性の説明は回避され、それに対する抵抗としての暴力だけが浮彫りにされる結果となった。春樹の論理に従うならば、『1Q84』の焦点は暴力を描くところにあるのではなく、新宗教の宗教性を暴くところにあるということである。春樹は日本人は日本人は自分自身の苦痛や問題を自分の力で思考せず、あまりにもたやすく宗教が提供する世界に同化し、慰安を求める傾向がある。その宗教が提供する世界がどれだけ魅力的なものであるにせよ、その世界に同化し自分の主体性を失うよりは、矛盾に満ちたこの世界を自分の力で耐え続けていくことを提案する。そしてその力なるものが「絶対的な愛」ということになる。しかし新宗教の物語に抵抗すべき「文学」の物語がむしろ一種の新宗教の新しいバージョンになってしまい、『1Q84』の意図は果たされなかったと言わざるをえない。それは春樹の宗教に対する一面的な理解に起因するところが大きいと思われる。
