백제 천지합제의 추이와 특징

The Transition and the Features of the Joint Rites for Heaven and Earth in Baekje Dynasty

초록

The joint rites for heaven and earth were conducted in the early third century under the reign of King Gho-ee, following the style of Chinese Jiaosi. At that time the emperor personally performed Jiaosi in China, and Baekje adopted this tradition. While the rites for heaven and earth were originally conducted only for special occasions, it came to be considered as serious since the reign of King Geun-cho-go. Baekje also accepted the latest trend of Eastern Jin Dynasty. Consequently, it came to serve as an enthronement ceremony. Although it is undeniable that the rites for heaven and earth got affected by Chinese Jiaosi, they also reflect the ideas that were unique to Baekje. For example, the heavenly god was treated as the ancestor-god. This is why the Baekje people performed rites for both heaven and earth at once instead of performing them separately. Also, they held a memorial service for their ancestors along with heaven and earth. Finally, because these rites served as the prayer for abundance, they performed them in the first month of the year instead of on the winter solstice.
