A Study on the Character Design Using Tang Sancai in WeChat Emoticons

According to the survey results of the Social Survey Center of China Youth Daily, 82.2% of the respondents in 2001 used emoticons when chatting online. People in their 20s and 30s are the main consumers in China, and they communicate with each other through social networks. The related industry on character design is not only the material that can cause cultural consensus, but also the field that can cause the inheritance of traditional culture. In order to discuss the position of traditional culture in character design, as a research method, this paper analyzed 500 kinds of free 2D emoticons around WeChat. The results show that only 7% of the classic emoticons contain traditional cultural factors, and only 8 emoticons are related to Tang Sancai. Then, another 100 emoticons were collected, which were divided into three types: female emoticons, male emoticons and animal emoticons. According to these three types, the image elements, colors and decorative styles are analyzed in turn, the correlation ratio of female emoticons is the highest. The reason is that female emoticons contains many factors that can identify and express history, identity and characteristics. Comparatively speaking, the proportion of animal emoticons is a little higher than male emoticons, because there are more personified female features in animal emoticons. Therefore, the most important thing is to study the traditional features of Tang Sancai. In addition, it should be designed in a modern way while keeping its original forming characteristics, so as to satisfy the tastes of young people as consumers.
