초록

Third-person pronouns ‘ku, kunye’ play a very minor role in Korean. Their appearance is extremely restricted so they can be found only in written language, and even in the written language, we prefer to repeat words simply rather than these. The most of their appearance is that of in short stories and this appearance is the almost only one reason why we admit the existence of ‘ku, kunye’ as third-person pronouns despite the appearance restriction. However, in the literatural text, their primary function does not seem to be pronominal. In the Korean short stories ‘ku, kunye’ represent that the characters they indicate are main characters that deserve the reader’s interest. In other words, they function as a focus maker and pronominal function is less common than this. Historically, third-person was introduced artificially by writers and this makes ‘ku, kunye’ idiosyncratic. If there are a variety of appearance restrictions on the use of these items as third-person pronoun, it is possible to say that ‘ku, kunye’ almost don’t exist as third-person pronouns.
