초록

Sophie Calle went through her parents’ divorce in her childhood and grew up in the absence of father, which causes calle to long for love and acceptance of her father and to obsess with her lover as a ‘father figure’. Thus the break-up with her lover functions as trauma for calle. Both Douleur exquise and Prenez soin de vous are the works showing the traumas and the healing from them. In Douleur exquise, Calle tells her suffering to other people, listens to and documents theirs to overcome it. In Prenez soin de vous, Calle asks others to interpret her wound and makes the interpretations into the work for the same purpose. This paper deems that Calle’s work-making process parallels the ‘Relational Aesthetics’ by Nicolas Bourriaud. According to Bourriaud, the Relational Aesthetics is the artistic practices by which an artist interacts with the audience or social members and creates the significance of the artwork in the social context. That is analogous to Calle’s works in that Calle generates a social field by sharing her intimate experiences with others. Hence, this paper attemps to interpret Calle’s Douleur exquise and Prenez soin de vous in terms of Relational Aesthetics.
