This study aims to explore how Military Human Resource Development (MHRD) has been adopted and evolved within the national defense sector by analyzing academic research trends on MHRD over the past two decades. To this end, a total of 10,033 articles published in 30 national defense-related journals indexed (or candidate) in the Korean Citation Index (KCI) were collected, from which 1,350 MHRD-related papers were identified and analyzed using bibliometric and keyword network analyses. The results indicate that although interest in MHRD has continued to grow, its academic foundation has yet to be fully established. Research topics have expanded beyond the core competencies required of military personnel to include broader HRD-related areas, such as job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Moreover, MHRD research has shown a high proportion of co-authorship, which is reflective of an active interdisciplinary collaboration, while author productivity analysis revealed that a large share of researchers published only a single paper, indicating a limited research continuity. In addition, in relation to the crisis of rapidly declining military manpower resources, MHRD shows very strong linkages with national defense policy and the domain of mental/spiritual combat power. These findings suggest that MHRD has evolved as a interdisciplinary academic field and highlight the importance of strengthening its linkage with personnel management and force development policies, as well as to expand civil-military research cooperation as a practical strategy to address the ongoing military manpower shortage.
