Previous research on dating violence has mainly focused on physical or sexual violence, and studies on emotional violence remain scarce, especially on verbal aggression in dating relationships. The study explored factors affecting verbal aggression in dating relationships. We investigated how covert narcissism affected verbal aggression in dating relationships, and the sequential mediation effect of negative urgency and reactive aggression between them. Based on the data obtained from 200 people in their 2-30s, we examined factors affecting verbal aggression in dating relationships by gender, and conducted sequential mediation analyses to test the sequential mediation effect of negative urgency and reactive aggression between covert narcissism and verbal aggression in dating relationships. We found that for men the older the higher the level of reactive aggression, whereas for women the older the more likely to display verbal aggression in dating relationships. The sequential mediation effect of negative urgency and reactive aggression between covert narcissism and verbal aggression in dating relationships was significant. The higher the level of covert narcissism, the higher the level of negative urgency, the higher the level of reactive aggression, and the more likely to display verbal aggression in dating relationships. Finally, we discussed the implications of the study on investigation of dating violence, victim interview, offender treatment, and crime prevention.
