초록

To understand South American ancestral art and its application in a picture book as the main proposal of this research. It is necessary to analyze and understand the possible meaning of the symbols used in ancient ceramics, long before Christopher Columbus arrived on American coasts. This art is called "pre-Columbian art". This article will study the symbols with the form of animals in ancient ceramics and rocks, which called "zoomorphic motifs". The methodology to be used in this research is qualitative. The literature review will explore books, academic articles on archeology, art, and relevant sources where the symbols and shape of the graphics belonging to pre-Columbian art are studied. This investigation seeks to find, show, interpret, explore, and demonstrate zoomorphic motifs in the Chilean picture book <Animal Tales>. Specific features can be observed in the illustrations linked to ancient ceramics. Also, it uses native stories from those cultures or geographic regions rescuing its intangible heritage. The author applies as a graphic and research resource the Chavin, Moche, and Inca cultures belonging to South America to develop her character designs. Its visual aesthetic contributes to learning about the history and cultures of which a motif or symbol belongs. To conclude, the results will provide to illustrators and audiovisual producers worldwide interested in using designs and art found in archaeological remains to rescue them from oblivion, bringing them to the modern world through illustration and appropriation, producing new designs inspired by the art of ancient cultures.
