초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the compositional elements used in the Witold Lutoslawski’s later works to see how they are related with his early work <Piano Sonata>(1934). His <Piano Sonata> is an early work and pan-tonal music, but I foucused on the relavance of late period compositional elements, which are interval class, chain technique, limited aleatorism. First and last movements of <Piano Sonata> focused to use interval classes 2 and 5, the second movement used 10 interval classes which consist of 7th chord figures stacked on 3rd intervals. The chain technique, which is a representative composition element in the late period, interlocks beginnings and ends of phrases, sections, and movements using common musical elements such as melody, rhythm, tempo. Chain techunique is found in all movements of <Piano Sonata>. Limited Aleatorism is not used directly in this sonata, but as a early formation of aleatorism, a number of irregular and unpredictable variants of motives appears in all movements, and open the way of his later limited aleatorism.
