1950년대 본토 일본문학에 그려진 ‘냉전기지’ 오키나와― 히노 아시헤이의 소설/희곡 「끊겨진 밧줄」을 중심으로 ―

초록

The current research aims to examine the status of Okinawa in Cold War Asia from the representation of Okinawa in mainland Japanese literature. To this end, the novel, The Torn-off Rope (1956) by Ashihei Hino (1907-1960) and a play published under the same title and performed in mainland Japan were analyzed. The mainland’s view about Okinawa, which turned into a “Cold War base” in the mid-1950s, was considered. More specifically, Hino’s literally discourse that attempted to intervene in the ongoing situation in Okinawa under the U.S. military rule, and the “pacifism” espoused by anti-base discourse in mainland Japan were critically examined against the backdrop of the sociopolitical context. The novel/play The Torn-off Rope, set in Okinawa when the “Island-wide land struggle” was triggered by the Price Report in 1956, accused America’s violence prevalent in Okinawa during the Cold War and urged solidarity between the anti-base movements in Okinawa and the mainland. However, Hino’s Okinawa discourse is a Cold War narrative that erases the traces of imperial/mainland Japan’s violence operating in Okinawa and covers up the fissure between the mainland and Okinawa by accusing the violence of the U.S., the “superior hegemon” of the Cold War regime. Okinawa as the “Cold War Base” calls for a re-examination of the memory of the Cold War for mainland Japan.
