This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of parenting stress, moderated by cognitive emotional regulation, on the relationship between the subfactors of mothers’ sensory processing sensitivity (low sensory threshold, ease of excitation, and aesthetic sensitivity) and parental burnout. Data were collected from 244 mothers of young children aged 3 to 6 years. Correlation analyses were conducted using SPSS 28.0, and both mediation and moderated mediation effects were tested with Hayes’ (2018) PROCESS macro Models 4 and 14. The results were as follows. First, correlation analyses among the subfactors of sensory processing sensitivity and other variables showed significant relationships for all variables except aesthetic sensitivity. Second, parenting stress exhibited a mediating effect in the relationships between low sensory threshold and ease of excitation and parental burnout. Third, the moderated mediation model revealed that the mediating effect of parenting stress, moderated by cognitive emotional regulation, was significant in the relationships between low sensory threshold and ease of excitation and parental burnout. These findings identify the pathway through which parenting stress, moderated by cognitive emotional regulation, mediates the association between mothers’ sensory processing sensitivity and parental burnout. The study highlights the importance of adopting a multilayered approach that considers mothers’ temperamental traits, emotion regulation abilities, and stress levels when addressing parental burnout.
