First Adoption of K-IFRS in Domestic Companies- Focusing on K-IFRS 1101

초록

Depending on the trend of unification of accounting standards, Korea is expected to adopt international financial reporting standards (IFRS) since 2011. The K-IFRS 1101 (K-IFRS First Adoption), a guideline for the corporation that first adopts the accounting standards, was enacted to determine accounting method of IFRS and the requirements for disclosure. Moreover, it includes the contents that can reduce the cost of retrospective restatement by IFRS first adoption. According to the K-IFRS 1101, it is a general principle that adopts retrospective restatement for the past period before the first adoption. However, the K-IFRS 1101 allows the optional exemption for retrospective restatement in case that costs for the IFRS retrospective restatement on several items exceeds the benefits. In addition, the K-IFRS 1101 regulates mandatory exceptions that prohibit retrospective restatement of international accounting standards for some accounting treatment. Therefore, companies that adopt at the first setout, need a strategic decision-making process to analyze the financial and non-financial effect for optional exemptions. And it is needed to consider the major GAAP differences that should adopt retrospective restatement due to the disallowance of optional exemptions.
