Firms absorb knowledge from their partners, make it into their own, and use it as material for innovation. Alliances exist in the form of portfolios, and the tie-strength of each partnership affects knowledge diffusion. In an alliance portfolio, the knowledge performance of a core company can vary depending on how concentrated these ties are. Based on the organizational learning curve theory, this study shows that the knowledge performance of the core firms can be changed according to the concentration of tie-strength using an agent-based model. In particular, the concentration of tie-strength decreased the cumulative knowledge of core firms. In other words, the firm's knowledge level reduces when it strongly ties with a particular company and remains weakly linked with the rest of the organization. This study also shows the cumulative knowledge reduction effect of the concentration of tie-strength varied depending on the situation. The more effective the internal research capacity of the firm, the greater the depreciation rate of knowledge, and the greater the tacitness of knowledge, the lower is the effect of reduction. On the other hand, the cumulative knowledge reduction effect was strengthened in companies with high absorptive capacity.
