초록

Kochang is located on the southwest of Jeollabookdo province. A museum of Pansori and Dongri Art Center in Kochang shows that this region is closely related to Pansori. The most important reason is that Shin Jaehyo, who compiled the Pansori of late Chosun dynasty and made rules of the performance of Pansori, worked actively based on this region. However, Shin Jaehyo did not create everything from "nothing". He made use of Kochang`s established base of Pansori, and sublimated it into a greater culture. One of the examples of established base of Pansori in this region is folk art. The records related to the music of this region go up to Baekje period. We can see that the base of music in this region differs from that of other regions through , , , all of which are known as songs of that period. Folk song in this region has its nature in fertile meadows, so it has various musical characteristics. This range of folk song which follows the seasides of Jeollanamdo province correspond with the area where Westside Mode is passed down. This diverse musical base is one of the factors that made Pansori possible to prosper in this region. The tradition of agriculture music which developed in Kochang is also an important basic culture of Pansori. Agriculture music in Kochang, which belong to `Right Wing agriculture music`, offered Shin Jaehyo an important basis for synthesizing Pansori because it stands in the middle and tries to harmonize both sides. That`s because each sects of Pansori gathered in this region and pursued harmony. The donations made by rich farmers for music and folk art was another factor that made pansori prosperous in this region. As the folk art of common people and the elegance of the rich joined together, an important characteristic of Pansori, ambivalence, could bloom. How to make use of and pass down this historical and geographical basis is the task which this region will have to solve in the future. The will to pass down folk art and constant experimental spirit are the projects which Shin Jaehyo developed in this region. To change this devotion into modern one and to practice it will be the key for this region to become center of Pansori again.
