초록
Yeun Hye-geun (1851-after 1921) spent his youth at Seonamsa, most prosperous lecture court in 19th century, he learned the essence of traditional Buddhism. He live at Daegakam in Seonamsa, he learned from Chimmyeong, Hammyeong, Gyeongbung, Cheonggong, Byeokpa and Geumam. In the 1890s, he wrote an eulogy to the main camp of Seonamsa Temple The Okhojang was built with the history of Seonamsa. He made friends with Gyeongun Wongi of Seonamsa and Geummyeong Bojeong of Songgwangsa, and with Confucian scholars Lee Gun Chang and Hwang Hyeon through poetry. Based on this buddhist tradition, he published articles in five Buddhist journals like Joseonbulgyoweolbo in ten years of 1910s to publicize the modernization of Buddhism. He published 140 articles over 159 times, he called for the modernizing of Joseon Buddhism, awakening of Buddhists, education of young people and the development of the future based on Buddhism. Hyegeun was at the forefront of pioneering changes and reforms in modern Buddhism based on traditional Buddhism. But he did not based on Seonamsa, the birthplace of his modern perception, devoted himself to the activities of Buddhist magazines in Seoul. He was forgotten in the Buddhist circles and even the last life became unclear, besides his comrades achieved good results.
