Aspects of Poem-Writing and Becoming-Other - Study on Lee Chang-dong’s Poetry

초록

This study examines Lee Chang-dong’s film Poetry through the interrelated themes of poetic writing and becoming-other. From its opening image of an anonymous female corpse, the film poses an ethical and aesthetic question about the relationship among poetry, death, and responsibility. At the center of the analysis is Mija, whose initially pragmatic and family-centered worldview is gradually transformed through her participation in a poetry class, her confrontation with her grandson’s sexual violence, and her encounter with the dead Heejin. Rather than reading this transformation as simple character development or moral enlightenment, this paper interprets it as a process of ethical subjectivation in which the subject relinquishes sovereign selfhood in response to the Other. Mija’s movement from ‘seeing well’ to ‘seeing differently’, and from speaking the already spoken to enacting the primordial act of saying, marks a shift from cognitive perception to ethical responsiveness. The film’s final structure, in which Mija’s voice gives way to Heejin’s, intensifies this logic of becoming-other into what may be called a form of ‘becoming-death’, understood not as self-erasure but as ethical self-transformation. Poetry is thus not merely a coming-of-age narrative or a social critique, but a cinematic meditation on how one might remain answerable to the face of the Other in a world shaped by violence, denial, and totalizing order.
