This study presents a Korean translation with annotations of the Preface to the Third Edition and the Introduction of Dictionary of the Foochow Dialect (1929), together with an examination of its compilation background and editorial history. Compiled by Robert Samuel Maclay and Caleb Cook Baldwin, the dictionary is one of the most important lexicographical works on the Foochow dialect, systematically documenting its phonology, vocabulary, and writing system during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The study first reviews the authors, the compilation process, and the development of successive editions before presenting annotated Korean translations of the introductory sections. It further explains the development of the Foochow Romanized (Bàng-uâ-cê, BUC) writing system, provides a correspondence table between BUC and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and offers explanatory notes on the dictionary’s pronunciation system and methods of Chinese character analysis. In particular, the original term alphabet is interpreted as referring to two complementary graphemic systems—radicals and phonetic components—to more accurately reflect the structural principles of Chinese characters. As a valuable source for the history of Chinese dialectology and missionary linguistics, Dictionary of the Foochow Dialect preserves important linguistic evidence of the Foochow dialect in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By providing an annotated translation of its introductory materials, this study aims to improve accessibility for Korean scholars and to contribute to future research on Chinese dialect history, missionary scholarship, and historical linguistic materials.
