This study examines the impact of contact effects and contact situation factors on the multicultural competency of Korean university students and analyzes the mediating role of their propensity for interaction expansion with international students. A mediation model was developed to achieve this, with contact effects and contact situation factors as independent variables, the propensity for interaction expansion as the mediating variable, and multicultural competency as the dependent variable. The study utilized survey responses from 163 students at S Women’s University in Seoul. The findings are as follows: First, contact effects and contact situation factors positively influenced the improvement of multicultural competency. Second, contact effects and contact situation factors had a positive impact on the propensity for interaction expansion with international students. Third, the propensity for interaction expansion with international students positively enhanced multicultural competency. Fourth, the propensity for interaction expansion was a significant mediator between contact effects and multicultural competency. As the number of international students continues to rise or remains stable, enhancing both the quantitative level of contact experiences and the qualitative level of contact situations for Korean university students is essential. This approach can foster positive evaluations and perceptions of contact experiences, ultimately contributing to improved learning outcomes such as multicultural competency.
