초록

This study tried to substantively grasp the meaning of ‘Hyun-Jang’, an abstract and complex concept that has been used for a long time in the Korean media, and to organize it systematically. As a result of examining the meaning of ‘Hyun-Jang’ covered in previous studies, it was found that it is divided into ‘reporter as a witness’, ‘building a network of factuality’ and ‘access to first-handed data’. These were classified into three perspectives: 'Space', 'Practice', and ‘Originality(independent reporting)’, respectively. Accordingly, this study defined ‘Hyun-Jang’ as ‘an environment in which a series of processes in which reporters discover articles on their own and find links between facts discovered through an independent verification process are performed’. Based on this, an attempt was made to compare the actual perceptions of reporters. As a result of conducting an in-depth interview to find out how reporters actually perceive the meaning of ‘Hyun-Jang’, it was found that the reporters understood and accepted the perspectives of and ‘space’, ‘practice’ but overlooked the perspective of ‘originality’. This is a phenomenon that shows that Korean journalists are feeling confused in the new media environment. Korean journalists showed an attitude of vaguely accepting only some of the journalistic values of ‘Hyun-Jang’.
