초록

Cheongguyeongeon, which is presently housed in the National Hangeul Museum, is the widely known Jinbon Cheongguyeongeon, believed to have been published in 1728 as indicated in its preface. However, orthographic characteristics of the book implies that it was transcribed later than 1728. Palatalization and rounded vowels that mostly appeared in the late 1700’s are important clues. The ratio of palatalization was very low in the early 18th century, but it becomes more than 50 percents, going through the mid 18th century. However, the ratio of palatalization of Cheongguyeongeon in the National Hangeul Museum is more than 90 percents, when investigated in the phrases such as “-di malla / -ji malla”. This phenomenon corresponds more to the orthography of the late 18th century than to that of the early 18th century. The ratio of rounded vowels also presents a similar situation. It was very low in the early 18th century but becomes much higher after the mid 18th century. However, Cheongguyeongeon in the National Hangeul Museum presents a very high ratio of rounded vowels in words such as ‘nunmeul / nunmul’. This fact indicates that the orthography of the book is not the result of the early 18th century or 1728 specifically but the product of the late 18th century. It also coincides with the phenomenon related to palatalization. Lastly, some specific words such as ‘we’, ‘nabui / nabwi’ and ‘gamagoe / gamagwi’ are important clues that imply the time Cheongguyeongeon was transcribed. ‘We’ is known as used after the 19th century, but it appears in Cheongguyeongeon. It cannot have existed in 1728, so its appearance plays a crucial role in assuming the time Cheongguyeongeon was transcribed. Additionally in Cheongguyeongeon, ‘gamagwi’ or ‘nabwi’ were always transcribed in such forms rather than ‘gamagoe’ or ‘nabui’, which appear seven and four times, respectively in this book. Considering ‘Ggamagoe’ and ‘nabui’ were used until the early 18th century, whereas ‘gamagwi’ and ‘nabwi’ began to show up only after the late 18th century, these words also verify the time when Cheongguyeongeon was transcribed. Upon these facts, I conclude that Cheongguyeongeon by Kim Cheontaek, presently housed in the National Hangeul Museum, was compiled after the late 18th century.
