The Effect of Therapeutic Music Activities Focused on Instrumental Playing on Self-Esteem and Stress in School-Age Children

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of instrument-based therapeutic mus ic activities on self-esteem and stress in school-aged children. The participants were 28 school-aged children registered at a Seoul-type Child Care Center in S District, Seoul, rand omly assigned to an experimental group (n = 15) and a control group (n = 13). Both groups completed a pre-test using self-esteem and stress scales. The experimental group then participated in instrument-based therapeutic music activities comprising 10 40-minute ses sions, while the control group engaged only in the center’s regular daily programs. After completing the 10 sessions, both groups completed a post-test using the same measures as the pre-test. The results of this study were as follows. First, the experimental group that participated in instrument-based therapeutic music activities showed a significant incre ase in self-esteem from the pre-test to post-test, and this increase was statistically signifi cant compared to the control group. Second, the experimental group demonstrated a signifi cant decrease in stress from the pre-test to post-test, which was also statistically significa nt relative to the control group. This study is meaningful in that it provides practical evidenc e that instrument-based therapeutic music activities can positively impact the psychological and emotional well-being of school-aged children. The findings can serve as a basis for developing music therapy programs for children and planning school- or community-based emotional support programs. Furthermore, the study highlights the potential of therapeutic music activities as a preventive intervention for children experiencing emotional difficulties, underscoring their academic and practical value.
